Each month, we'll be acknowledging one of our star Caregivers and giving them a platform to share what it is they love about their job, some of their favourite memories and any advice they have for newer Caregivers who are just starting out. Our first Caregiver Spotlight is on Pamela MacKarney from Nurse Next Door Halifax.Meet Pamela!
Pamela was born and raised in Nova Scotia - her family has lived in the province for many generations. Pamela joined the team at Nurse Next Door Halifax back in 2017 and has been making lives better ever since.
What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about my job is that it doesn't seem like a job at all. Usually, work is something you don't like to do. I love spending time helping my clients and seeing them smile.
Tell us about your favourite memory with a client?
My favorite memory with a client would be when I was visiting a lady who had once loved to play the piano. She had this beautiful piano but because of her arthritis she would make mistakes, and therefore would avoid playing. She would always ask me to play for her but I didn't know how. So, everytime I visited her, we sat together and she would teach me notes. I also practiced a bit at home. She was delighted that, on her birthday, I was able to play a few songs for her which included playing for her, "Happy Birthday."
What does #HappierAging mean to you?
Happier aging to me, means to be able to stay in your home as long as possible, doing the things you love to do. To feel independence without feeling loneliness.
What advice would you give to new Caregivers starting in the industry?
My advice is enjoy your clients, learn from your clients and be proud that you are doing a very important job. Thank you for everything you do, Pamela!
